East Leg I CP08-95 Prefiling Request -- PDF

East Leg I CP08-95

Project Overview

The East Leg I expansion is part of the Northern Lights project, a multiphase pipeline expansion project designed to increase the capacity of Northern Natural Gas’ natural gas pipeline in its market area through 2026. The Northern Lights project offers an economical way to deliver the increased demands for clean, efficient natural gas to meet the growing energy demands for residential, commercial and industry use, power generation, and ethanol production.

Project Description

The project includes the construction of (1) a 1-mile extension of the existing 30-inch-diameter Ogden-Waterloo D-line, (2) 5 miles of a 6-inch-diameter branch line loop on the existing 4-inch-diameter Clarksville branch line, (3) approximately 2 miles of an 8-inch-diameter greenfield branch line, and (4) a new meter station, all located within the state of Iowa. The project is necessary to meet Hawkeye Shell Rock and Aquila, Inc. requests for firm capacity totaling 12,500 decatherms per day effective September 1, 2008, and November 1, 2008, respectively. In order to obtain approval for the project from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the federal agency that regulates interstate pipelines, Northern submitted a prior-notice request March 18, 2008. FERC docketed the filing at CP08-95-000. The project was approved to commence construction effective May 24, 2008. Construction was completed, and the facilities were placed into service November 1, 2008.
